family rooms 2015 Greater Austin Parade HomesIntroduced to us by George Nelson and Henry Wright in 1945, the term “family room” was used to described the "room without a name", or what was the biggest room in the house that could serve as the casual-multiple needs room. (Tomorrow’s House by George Nelson and Henry Wright). Well, 70 years after the vision of the all-purpose gathering space, we are living up to their description-only a few differences. See what you think – “The family room is designed to be a place where family and guests gather for group recreation like talking, reading, watching TV, and other family activities. Often, the family room is located adjacent to the kitchen, and at times, flows into it with no visual breaks. A family room often has doors leading to the back yard and specific outdoor living areas such as a deck, garden, or terrace.”. I think they nailed it 70 years ago as they described the modern home needs moving forward. During the 2015 Greater Austin HBA Parade of Homes five builders showed us the visual definition of a family room. Open floor plan, common-informal-space, in the heart everything family.
